A homemade fruit smoothie is delicious and well worth any effort involved in the making of it

Most fruits have a good source of vitamin A, vitamin E and vitamin C as well as antioxidants which help prevent heart disease and cancer. The minute you cook fruit then you destroy these vital elements which are so important to our health. Raw fruit is also much easier for us to digest.

A homemade fruit smoothie can be made up of any fruit you choose. There are no limitations except in your imagination.

Use fresh fruit - as fruit juice which is bought in the supermarket can have lots of additives, colourings and flavourings added. Sometimes there is more water in cartons of juice bought from the supermarket shelf than there is juice. Always read the labels. Fibre is also important to our bodies and if we use a juicer all the time to make juice then we are missing out on something our bodies need to get rid of toxins and waste. Making a smoothie you use a blender which will leave enough bits of fruit intact for our bodies to make use of.

Fruit acid is found in all fruit which has cleansing properties. Grapes and pineapple contain tartaric acid which helps prevent moulds and bacteria growth. Apples, apricots, lemons, prunes and peaches contain malic acid, a natural antiseptic which helps clean the liver and your intestines. Oranges help get rid of toxins from your digestive track with the help of pectin.

How to make smoothies part of your everyday routine - As a general guideline we are now advised to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables every day. Making a homemade fruit smoothie can provide one or more of those portions.

Try and drink your smoothie as soon as you have made it. Fruit will oxidize and lose its vitamin C content as soon as the air hits.

There are lots of nutrients in the fruit's skin so don't peel your apples, peaches, plums and any other fruit where the skin can be eaten.

Fruit have a high natural sugar content which can aggravate conditions such as candida.

Buy fresh fruit without bruising. Fruit which is past its best will be low in vitamin content and fruit which is under ripe may give you indigestion.

How to make smoothies more interesting by adding other ingredients to your homemade fruit smoothie

  • Sparkling water or soda water can add a little fizz
  • Honey, maple syrup or unrefined sugar will sweeten your smoothie
  • Fresh herbs and spices such as garlic or ginger can give your smoothie a little punch
  • Ice cubes can be put into the blender and crushed with your smoothie on a hot day
  • Decorate your smoothie with a cocktail umbrella or a slice of lemon
  • Sugar frost the rim of your smoothies - dip the rim of the glass in a little lemon juice, then dip the rim in some sugar.

Homemade Fruit Smothie Recipes - 1 serving

Sweet Banana
  • 1 cup of yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • 1 banana or peach
Mix together in a blender and serve.

Grapes and Strawberries
  • 1 cup of yogurt
  • 20 grapes either green or red
  • 10 strawberries
  • 1 apple
Blend together in the blender and serve.

Coconut Smoothie
  • 1 cup of coconut milk
  • 1 banana
  • 2 slices of fresh pineapple
Mix together all the ingredients in a blender and serve in a glass and sprinkle with grated coconut.

Tropical Smoothie
  • 2 mangoes
  • 1 banana
  • 150ml almond milk
Stone and peel the mangoes. Peel the banana. Mix all the ingredients together in a blender and serve your homemade fruit smoothie.

Milky Berry Smoothie
  • 1 cup of soya milk
  • 40 blueberries
  • 1 pomegranate
Remove the seeds from the pomegranate before placing all ingredients into the blender and mixing.
