Non Dairy Smoothies
Non dairy smoothies are great for people who are allergic or have an intolerance to lactose. I much prefer to drink a smoothie without milk because I think cows' milk has the smell of cow and it leaves a sticky taste in my mouth which I just don’t like.
Most smoothies include dairy of some sort whether it's in the milk, yoghurt or ice cream. This page is for anyone who wants to drink smoothies dairy free!
It is said that 5% of the adult population is lactose intolerant, a condition which is caused by the lack of the enzyme, lactase which helps break down and absorb lactose in your intestines.
A lactose intolerance can leave you feeling bloated, give you wind and even give you diarrhoea, all very unpleasant symptoms which can be easily avoided by simply replacing diary foods.
To replace dairy we have made a list so you can make your own non dairy smoothies. Find a replacement which you really enjoy because a smoothie is for pleasure as well as for the health benefits.
Tofu - will add a nice creamy texture to your smoothies. Low in calories and fat and high in protein and iron.
Almond milk - you can buy almond milk
or make your own at home using a large handful of almonds with a little water and liquidise in the blender. Not only lactose free it is also cholesterol free and wow does it taste good - although go easy as it is high in calories.
Soya milk - probably the most popular replacement for milk although for some the taste can take a bit of time of getting used to.
Coconut milk - I love coconut milk but it's not just the taste that is good, there are so many health benefits. This lovely milk can help maintain your blood sugar levels, help lower your blood pressure and is rich in calcium so helps build and maintain strong bones. So many benefits to help you enjoy your smoothie even more.
Non dairy ice cream - Hey who doesn’t love ice cream and it is great news that non diary ice creams can be easily bought now from the supermarkets in all sorts of flavours and usually made with soya milk. So go ahead and treat yourself to an ice cream smoothie.
Oat milk - completely lactose and cholesterol free you can add this milk to coffee, tea, cereal and of course your smoothies. A great alternative.
Rice milk - another great alternative to use in your smoothie recipes. Thin enough to add to tea and coffee. With no cholesterol and saturated fats and low sodium content rice milk is a health replacement choice for your non dairy smoothies.
Buffalo’s Milk - this is a very healthy option containing far more calcium or protein than cows' milk and far less cholesterol, however beware - unlike all the other suggestions on this page it does still contain lactose, so go very carefully if you are lactose intolerant.
