Many people don’t know how to make almond milk so on this page we will show you just how easy it is.

Almond milk is delicious and can be used as an alternative to milk when making smoothies or simply to drink on its own and enjoy its nutty flavour.

As well as delicious there are many almond health benefits which we will go into in this article. Obviously if you have a nut allergy this almond milk is not going to suit you; if you are looking for an alternative to dairy milk then look at our non dairy alternatives page.

Almonds contain calcium, iron, vitamin E, magnesium and zinc.

One of the great things about almonds is it is gluten free, low in cholesterol and carbohydrates, but there are many more benefits and reasons to make almond milk.

Some Almond Health Benefits

Constipation - almonds are full of fibre and will help relieve constipation; however don’t forget to drink plenty of water as a dehydrated body is a constipated one! Prune juice is an another excellent remedy.

Pregnancy - you need plenty of folic acid -and almonds contain loads -when you are expecting a baby to help prevent some birth defects.

Cancer - almonds can help prevent cancer of the colon as they have plenty of fibre in them which can help prevent constipation, therefore keeping the colon healthy.

Heart - almonds can help prevent heart disease as they contain vitamin E which is an antioxidant. Antioxidant protects us from free radicals which in turn age our bodies. The fat that almonds contain is mono saturated fat which unlike some fat is good for our heart.

Blood pressure - almonds contain potassium which helps regulate your blood pressure although your weight and the exercise you take will also play their part. These are just a few reason your body can profit from almond health benefits.

How to Make Almond Milk

There is no exact science for the ingredients or quantities when making almond milk.

Some people like to add sweeteners such as honey or syrup but I prefer it unscented - its all a matter of taste.

Some people like their milk to be very thin, others prefer a thick liquid, some even add vanilla or other flavourings: it’s a matter of experimenting and getting the milk that suits your taste buds.

Make Almond Milk - the basics

  • 1 cup of almonds
  • 2 cups of water

1. Place the almonds in a bowl and soak for 8 - 12 hours.

2. Put the almonds in a blender with a little of the water and blend so the almonds are broken down.

3. Pour the rest of the water into the blender and blend for a few minutes until smooth.

4. Add any extra ingredients such as 1tbls of honey or ½ teaspoon of vanilla essence at this point and blend for another few seconds.

5. Now pour the liquid through a fine strainer such as a muslin cloth .

6. Pour into a container which can be stored in the refrigerator.

Almond milk can be kept for up to one week.
