Make a Smoothie

To make a smoothie is easy - all you really need is some fruit and milk, yogurt and ice.

However you can experiment to your heart's content with the combination of fruits you choose.

Instead of milk or yogurt why not try using soya milk, goat's milk, coconut milk, ice cream or almond milk. In fact a smoothie is as exciting as your imagination wants to make it.

Most smoothies can be made in a blender; however if you want to use fresh orange, lemon, or grapefruit juice then it's best to invest in a citrus juicer as well.

If you want to eat your five a day but are struggling with this, either because it seems a lot or because you just don't like fruit, then a smoothie is a delicious way to do this.

A smoothie can be a meal in a glass which is good news for people who are looking to grab something which is a light, easily digested energy boost at breakfast or lunch time. Make a smoothie for dessert, the kids will just love it.
  • Use fresh fruit
  • Use fruit which is organic
  • Use fruit which has not been bruised or damaged
  • Wash fruit before using
Serve your smoothies immediately or at least within 20 minutes.

Serve Chilled
Smoothies are at their best when served chilled. This can be achieved by chilling the fruit, milk or other ingredients before you make a smoothie. It can also be achieved by adding ice cubes with the smoothie before blending.

Serve Straight Away
Serve your smoothies as soon as they are made. If a smoothie is left, the fruit could discolour and the liquid will separate. Although it won't spoil the taste of the smoothie it will however spoil the nutrient content and not look nearly as appetising.

Sweetness
If you feel there is not enough sweetness in your smoothie, perhaps because your fruit is not ripe, then add some runny honey.

Wash Your Blender
After you have made your smoothie it's so much easier to wash your blender if you do it straight away. Leave it at your peril because it can be hard work if the fruit and milk have dried.


The recipes below will make a smoothie for 4 people

Raspberry Milk Smoothie
  • 300ml of chilled low fat raspberry yogurt
  • 100ml of chilled milk
  • 100g of frozen raspberries
Put all the ingredients into the blender and smoothe before serving in a glass.

Orange Ice Cream Smoothie
  • 200ml of fresh orange juice
  • 100g chilled low fat yogurt
  • 100ml chilled milk
  • 4 scoops of vanilla ice cream
Put all the ingredients into the blender and smoothe before serving in a glass.

Strawberry Ice Cream Smoothie
  • 300ml chilled milk
  • 300ml strawberry yogart
  • 175grm chilled strawberries
  • 4 scoops of strawberry ice cream
Put all the ingredients into the blender and smoothe before serving in a glass.

Pineapple Ice Cream Smoothie
  • 200ml chilled coconut milk
  • 150ml of chilled low fat natural yogurt
  • 100ml chilled pineapple juice
  • 4 scoops of vanilla ice cream
Place all the ingredients into a blender and smoothe before pouring into a glass to serve.

Ginger and Chocolate Ice Cream Smoothie
  • 200ml chilled milk
  • 100ml ginger ale
  • 4 scoops of chocolate ice cream
Place all the ingredients into a blender and smoothe before pouring into a glass to serve.
