Fresh fruits and vegetables are the key to a healthy future

Fresh fruit and vegetables should be big a part of everyone's diet, and you should consume a minimum of five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

Not only are fresh fruit and vegetables delicious, they also have many health benefits, and you can help to improve your daily wellbeing and longterm health by simply adding extra servings of fresh fruits and vegetables to your daily diet.

Weight Control -- because fresh fruits and vegetables are high in fiber and low in calories, they fill your stomach and keep you full longer than high calorie processed foods. The Center for Disease Control advises that you substitute fruit for high calorie desserts, and vegetables for fatty foods when you are eating healthy to lose weight or to maintain a healthy weight.

Digestive Regulation -- due to their high fiber content, another one of the benefits of eating fresh fruits and vegetables is that they help to regulate and cleanse the digestive system.

Nutrient and Vitamin Rich -- fresh fruits and vegetables are high in Vitamin C and Folate (folic acid). Vitamin C is crucial for the body's ability to produce and repair tissues. It is also helps heal cuts and wounds, and keeps teeth and gums healthy. Folic acid helps the body form red blood cells. It is also recommended that pregnant women eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables with an adequate amount of folic acid to reduce the risk various birth defects.

Convenient -- it is easy to have fresh fruits and vegetables readily available to you when food cravings hit. You can cut them into smaller pieces and carry them in a plastic bag or box as a handy and healthy snack. Because they do not contain cholesterol and are naturally low in fat, sodium, and calories, they are a good substitute for potato chips or any other salty snack.

Disease Prevention -- due to their high level of antioxidants, daily servings of fresh fruits and vegetables have been shown to help prevent illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and certain cancers. The World Cancer Research Fund's cancer prevention diet includes plenty of fresh fruit and veg every day.

Healthy Teeth -- crunchy fresh vegetables like carrots and celery and fruits like apples help to cleanse your teeth of plaque and strengthen your gums in order to prevent gum disease. They also help to rid the surface in between your teeth of that hard-to-reach plaque that is often missed when flossing and brushing.

Make sure you take advantage of the wonderful abundance of seasonal fruit and vegetables, and include lots in your diet, every day.
